I bought this to help my Texas born and raised husband when he moved here to Virginia. He teaches Elementry school and just wanted a short, easy basics book to get a general feel for Virginia history in case he was asked to teach it this fall, due to teacher shifting. This book covers asked lot of topics, yes, but it seems to make the assumption that the reader is already familiar with Virginia history. For example, Chapter 3, page 23. " In the 1580s the famous" lost colony" of Roanoke with settled, lost and abandoned. But there were moments of exploration in temporary settlement leading up to the 1607 Jamestown."
The Lost Colony is only give that one sentence? My husband said to me, what's the lost colony? How is it famous? So our 4th grader told him. Luckily, there are other books on specific Virginia topics, but we were really hoping for a general history that wasn't written in a textbook for, and while I guess that's what we got, it was so brief and bare bones in parts that some of the facinating things that happened, and would help to make history come alive for a non native and more enjoyable as a read, just were not there.

It's a great informative book, I really enjoyed it.
I was born in Virginia and found this to be a great historical book from the place I was born. Love the mountains and country living. I no longer live there but I have fond memories from my childhood.
